Tumeric: The Beauty Spice

This is my biggest kept beauty secret: Turmeric, there I said it! Turmeric is a bright yellow spice obtained from the roots of a plant in the ginger family. It's a very earthy spice, with a peppery taste, and a mustard-y smell. I know what you're thinking, you're saying to yourself, yeah okay but why should I eat, or put this on my face?! Well Turmeric contains an active ingredient called Curcumin, a powerful antioxidant that provides an incredible amount of health benefits, some of which include: Anti-Cancer- slows and kills (also prevents!) the growth of several types of cancer. Immune Booster- This spice is proven to be five to eight times stronger than Vitamin C&E, it fights bacteria throughout your body, and when taken internally will help cleanse and regulate your digestive system. Anti Inflammatory- Turmeric helps prevent allergies, and countless diseases without the harsh side affects of using regular medical drugs. Skin Booster- Cleanses the skin and helps maintain the skins elasticity and boosts radiance. Here are just a few key things I use Turmeric for: To treat Menstrual pain, DIY Face Masks, in my cleanser, cooking, and for a digestive detox. When I first heard of Turmeric I quickly ran out to Whole Foods and grabbed the wonder spice, it cost about $5.99 and it was certified pure and organic. I instantly started adding it into my smoothies, as well as cooking (it's wonderful with tacos, any type of meat, as well as salads!) (Weird fact: Turmeric is white makes mustard yellow!) I was so excited to start using it on my face because Turmeric is very well known for its lightening properties for any type of scarring, and helping treat existing acne. In India it's highly popular that brides would use this in a face mask to achieve the "wedding day glow" and I can absolutely agree, it does leave your skin with such radiance. On days when I'm feeling blah I typically use my everyday cleanser (GLAM GLOW Super Cleanse)  add just a pinch in Turmeric to it, emulsify it in my hand, and continue to cleanse just as normal. My skin has naturally lightened and my dark spots have faded as a result to continuously using Turmeric- with the help of some incredible serums! (I'll have my Every day skincare routine up very soon!) Now, there are hundreds of different DIY (Do It Yourself) Face Masks that involve Turmeric but i'll share my favorites below, let me know if you've tried them!

The Glowing Face Mask:

  • 1/ 4 teaspoon of Turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon Honey
  • 1  teaspoon Milk

Whitening Turmeric Face Mask

  • 1/4 teaspoon Turmeric Powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Lemon Juice
  • 1 Tablespoon Honey

Ultra Radiance Face Mask

  • 1/4 teaspoon Turmeric Powder
  • 1 tablespoon avocado
  • 1 teaspoon yogurt

I must advise, if you feel any tingling, that is normal, however burning is not! If your skin begins to burn, wash off right away. Everyone's skin is different, and it's hard to predict the reaction each individual will have. I highly recommend to let each face mask to sit for about 5-10 minutes or until fully dried then rinse! Also, Turmeric is notorious for staining, so do not use any white fabric when using this spice! (but this will not stain your face-promise!) With so many health benefits and countless ways to use this beautifying spice, these are just a few of the ways I use it in my every day life. If you happen to try any of my DIY Face Mask, or have a cool way of incorporating Turmeric into your recipes, let me know and share your thoughts. Now you know one of my biggest kept beauty secrets, I hope it spreads like wildfire.
