10 Simple Ways to Improve your Mood
Hello lovelies and happy Wednesday! Today I decided to get a little personal on the blog and share with you all how I'm truly feeling about this winter. This winter has actually been a very mild one here in Maine and I can't complain. Lately we've been getting slammed with snow storms and incredibly cold temperatures...and it hasn't been fun. Last week I was actually forced to stay home due to bad driving conditions and as much as I love "snow days" it was a bummer I couldn't go to work. This winter has actually been a very productive one for Dustin and I, we made some very big decisions and set incredible plans in place for 2016. I'm proud to say I've truly made it a point to hit the gym 4-5 days out of the week and I've stuck to my goal. I'm feeling better than ever and I hope to keep on the right track. Anyway, back to this post...Many individuals here in Maine are affected by Seasonal Affective Disorder, which can make you feeling sad, empty, tired, and ultimately lifeless in the winter time. This is why today I wanted to share with you my personal tips on how to boost your mood while fighting to fend of any winter time blues. This is a full proof way to distract yourself from the blues. I love hitting up my local library and searching for a new, feel good novel. I'm all about Jodi Piccoult lately, her novels are incredible! I'm also a huge reader, every day an hour before work you can find me wandering through Books A Million, or sitting down at a table with 4-6 magazines, just casually reading, slowly sipping a coffee. There's nothing more relaxing than flipping through an issue of Cosmo or self, it's an easy way to distract yourself.
This one is scientifically proven, if you just spend twenty minutes out of your day petting your little fur ball, your bound to feel less stressed. Whenever I'm feeling a little blue I grab Pablo, set him on my lap and slowly pet him, his constant pur is a free form of therapy. Chances are your pet just wants your quality time, too. Whether it be a dog or a cat, they're probably highly entertaining. Take your precious pooch for a walk, or play fetch for a few minutes, you're bound to feel instantly happier.
Our bedroom is surrounded by scented candles, we just can't get enough. I'm all about aromatherapy, and integrating uplifting scents into everyday life. I love laying on our bed, burning my favorite candle while reading, or just curled up in warm blankets. I truly believe aromatherapy is the easiest way to uplift yourself, and that everyone needs to invest in a few essential oils. My favorite candle at the moment is Peony Petals, Oak Moss & Sage and Jasmine. I love fruity scents, but lately I've been loving florals for some reason. Maybe it's a girl thing, but I'm a little obsessed with candles.
Call me the queen of bubble baths, I at least take one once a week. A few years ago I worked seasonally for Lush and absolutely loved it. I stocked up on Bath Bombs, which are loaded with essential oils and turn your bath into an array of colors. There's nothing more I love than indulging in a bubble bath with a nice bath bomb. I love surrounding our bathroom in candles, pouring myself a small glass of wine and soaking in the tub for a little while. Maybe it's too much information, but my guy loves taking baths with me, we'll rub each others feet, or have meaningful conversations about our plans for the future, it really is the sweetest thing. This is one thing I swear by, something anyone can do to boost their mood and force themselves to relax.
This is the most simple thing you can do to boost your mood, instantly. Hugging makes everyone feel better, no matter who they hug. If you're alone, hell, hug your pet. Hugging is proven to boost your Oxycontin levels and helps fight off infections... strange, huh? It truly is the easiest way to boost your mood and make you smile. There is nothing better than having a warm embrace with a loved one, that's the first thing I do when I see Dustin and it makes me feel incredible. So, go for it, hug it out...
Exercise IS the cheapest form of therapy and the best anti depressant out there. Even if you aren't a fitness finatic like me, breaking a sweat for ten minutes daily can boost your mood and speed up your metabolism. I can't stress it enough, exercise has truly made all the difference in my attitude and spirit. When you feel good, you look good, and exercise can change your life, if you let it. Even if you just do thirty jumping jacks and thirty squats, you're bound to feel 10x better instantly. Next time you're feeling down, try exercise, I swear by it.
This one's a given, but it doesn't hurt to remind everyone... Meditation can help calm you down, center yourself, and help slow a chaotic mind. Even if you practice deep breathing for a few minutes daily, that will make all the difference in your mood. Whenever you're in a stressful situation, truly take a step back, count to ten slowly, take a few deep breaths and begin again. If you're a big fan of meditation or are curious on how to slow your mind, try yoga. Yoga is the easiest way to center yourself and help you get in touch with yourself. I used to take yoga classes through high school and it was the best way for me to boost my mood, nix my anxiety and helped my focus. Deep breathing seems a little silly at first, but it can truly work wonders on your mood, mind, and spirit.
This one is my favorite form of kicking the blues, boosting my mood and uplifting my spirit. Whenever I'm feeling down my favorite thing to do is grab my fuzziest blanket, get into my warmest sweats and curl up on the couch with Dustin. There's nothing better than cuddling with your guy. Even if we're curled up together watching Netflix, it instantly makes me feel better to cuddle in his arms. Surrounding yourself with the ones you love when you're feeling down is of huge importance, always.
Need I say more? If all else fails take a bite of dark chocolate. It's proven to boost your mood and is even good for your skin! What's not to love about chocolate? Sometimes if chocolate is a no go, I'll run to my nearest coffee shop and pick up a small cup of coffee or a latte. Espresso can be a mood booster too, but drink wisely. Food can be an instant pick me up, but remember to not go on a full binge, or else you're bound to feel worse.
